January 2009 Hello Visitors to my Homepage! "Fall seven times, stand up eight." - Japanese Proverb in Ben Mikaelsen's Touching Spirit Bear This winter, seventh graders will read a fairly edgy choice for our next in-class novel: Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen (2001), and we will follow Cole Matthew's character transformation.  Cole's journey is sure to keep everyone turning the pages of this young adult novel.   Eighth graders will read Stephen Vincent Benet's short story, The Devil and Daniel Webster, paying particular attention to figurative language and to the complex answers to this innocuous question: what does it mean to be an American?         Best,         Susie Becker
